How do I automatically thank people who mention me in their story?

Create an automation with the trigger “User mentions you in their story” and write your thank-you DM. It needs no keyword and no button, and it answers every mention, on every plan.

Why it helps

When someone mentions you in their story, they are talking about you in public. A quick thank-you shows you noticed. But mentions come in at any hour, and they are easy to miss.

A mention automation sends your thank-you DM for you, straight away.

Steps

  1. Open Automations and click New automation. If you have more than one Instagram account, choose the account.
  2. Under Name your automation, type a name, like “Story mention thanks”.
  3. Under Select a trigger, choose User mentions you in their story.
  4. Under Auto-reply, write your thank-you DM. You can add a link, like a discount code page.
  5. Optional: under Collect their contact info, ask for an email or phone number.
  6. Click Save & activate.

How it works

  • No keyword. A story mention has no text to match, so the automation answers every mention.
  • No button. A mention lets you message the person, so the whole DM is sent at once. There is nothing for them to tap first. See The 24-hour window.
  • Every mention gets its own thank-you. Mentions are not limited per person. Each one is a separate public act, so each one is answered.
  • One DM per mention. If you have two mention automations, only one answers each mention.

It keeps running

There is no single story to pick. The automation answers every mention from now on, until you pause it.

On Pro and Scale, you can set an end date with End this campaign. On Free, pause it by hand when you are done. See Which trigger should I use?

Write a thank-you that reads well

  • Keep it short and warm, like “Thank you so much for the shout-out!”.
  • Say what you can offer, if anything, such as a code or a link.
  • The same person may mention you often. Write a message that still reads well the third time.

Good to know

  • The trigger is on every plan, including Free.
  • A thank-you DM counts toward your sending limits. On Free, it also counts toward your monthly DMs.
  • The AI DM assistant does not reply to mentions. Only your written DM goes out.
  • If you ticked Stop DM for a person in Comment Shield, they get no thank-you either, while Comment Shield is on.
